BRITISH GT4 CHAMPION

Donington - 06/10/13

GT4 Champion, the perfect way to end a challenging year. The fight for the GT4 title came down to the very last round at Donington. Five teams were in the hunt for the championship and I am pleased to say, myself and Rick came out on top.

It has been a difficult year, as the season did not start the way we were planning. The car required a lot of work after we received it from Ginetta, it had electrical problems at Rockingham and of course the accident at Zandvoort.

We also enjoyed a lot of success, achieving 3rd overall and 1st in class at Silverstone, two wins at Snetterton and a win at the Brands Hatch GP. Myself and Rick had 3 DNF’s this year but still held the championship lead going into the last round, which was a significant achievement for ourselves and the team.

Going into the last round as Championship leaders, Rick and I knew that to come home GT4 Champions we had to finish second to Declan Jones and Nathan Freke. Rick started the race and drove with his head. Rick knew he did not have to beat Nathan Freke, so he did not fight him on track and stayed out of trouble. When I began my stint we were still in second position behind the Century Motorsport car of Declan and Nathan. I wanted to end the season on a high and take both the win and the championship. Catching Declan by a second a lap I was soon on the back of him and applying pressure. He made a mistake leading to a spin through the gravel. This allowed me to take the position and concentrate on pulling out a lead. Sadly due to a misunderstanding with the event organisers and time keepers we were pulled in to the pits for a 1 second stop go penalty. After this we came out in second place again. Knowing we could win the championship from this position we maintained concentration and brought the car home in 3rd overall and 2nd in class, meaning that myself and Rick Parfitt Jnr were crowned British GT4 Champions.

I have honestly had the best season of my racing career and it is something that will stay with me forever. I cannot thank Rick enough for all his effort and awesome pace all year. Huge thanks goes to the Optimum Motorsport team, Team Principle Shaun Goff and my two mechanics Jonny Nabbs and Andrew Warren.

The biggest thanks goes to my sponsors, Groundhog UK Ltd, Genquip, David Mason Watches and Plumb Design, as without them I would not be where I am today.
